Ebbing Footsteps
Let me scrawl magnificent brushstrokes
Across the canvas of time
To offer a murky reflection
Of just one contemporary mind

Vicious reds and apathetic blacks
Melancholy blues slashing open backs
A bombshell thrown in for historical effect
Because my time — this history — must always be a wreck

Run, rabbit, RUN toward shimmering angst —
the dimming western skyline
whose power outage you are obliged to witness,
because how else can you combat the sound of stale water spilling?
From rows of cups of unconscious tedium.

Collect another leafy anecdote
And embroider soothing frames around each pretty problem.

Melt into a sea of foreboding
that panicked and arrived too soon
To descend upon impatient self-deceivers.

Or, wrench your foot from its
finely adorned bear-trap
And splatter paint on the soles of your feet.
Puddle around in buckets of flowing life.
And sprint into the whirling sunset with your soul on fire
Leaving a trail of murky, complicated colors meant for no one
but the past,
and the vigorous reflection of a dying moon
